Maybe its just me, but alchemy seems like one of the more appropriate themes for hidden object games. Lost Grimoires Stolen Kingdom gets this goal, and with the help of Artifex Mundi its possible it could be another hidden object hit. So what’s the verdict?
Gameplay:
Lost Grimoires contains a similar gameplay structure to many other Artifex Mundi games, but the developers didn’t just stick to the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality. In fact, there is a completely new type of puzzle introduced, and alchemy has many connections to in-game progress. Some, including the former could be a bit more fleshed out, but its always good to see risks taken.
Story & Design:
Lost Grimoires story is a little less to write home about. Considering the game’s length, it could come off as “short and sweet” but instead its darn predictable and often generic. Characters simply aren’t compelling enough to carry it as well, which makes me believe Artifex Mundi’s previous small successes in the story department may have been a fluke. (It’s never been their strong suit anyways)
Presentation/Visuals & Audio:
I don’t know what the development cycle of Lost Grimoires was like, but the absence of end-game content makes it seem like Artifex Mundi may have had a couple of other projects in their hands. On the plus side, this makes it easier to grab all the game has to offer through achievements/trophies in maybe one sitting, but its definitely telling of the game’s length.
Conclusion:
Lost Grimoires Stolen Kingdom is simply a stepping stone for what could truly be the next great Artifex Mundi game. Most of this is seen in the gameplay which has decent variation, but don’t expect the potential to be much elsewhere. At this point, you know what you’re getting into.
