Augmented Reality Mixed Reality Virtual Reality
VR Genres and Uses
I spent the last couple of days reading the last couple chapters of both Entering the Metaverse: A Guide to Joining the Virtual Reality Industry by Liv Erickson and Virtual Reality Insider: Guidebook for the VR Industry by Sky Nite, as well as some articles on UploadVR and other industry websites. I think what I found most interesting from these readings was Nite’s chapter on VR in education. He wrote of the days when students can just stay at home and put on a VR headset to “go to school”. The chapter talked of a day when people can just subscribe to a specific VR curriculum and where the classes would all be educational games played in VR where the students would have to accomplish tasks that in turn made the students learn. I also liked the idea of the games and content being made harder for those who are having a very easy time and easier for those who are struggling. This would all be based on data the game could collect instantly. He also discussed how education in VR could give the students instant feedback instead of them having to wait for the teacher to grade it. I think today a lot of students still find school boring, and in some cases it is because it is simply too easy for them or just doesn’t engage them enough. I feel like VR education could help make people less bored since everything would be a game.
I think the aspect of these readings that will have the most impact on my projects and work would be Nite’s writings about the different genres that VR is capable of and how to best create and design content for these genres in VR.
What I have read over the past few days applies to me as a developer by discussing current possibilities and possibilities for the future with VR.
I feel like the most important take away from what I have read over the last few days is that VR has many use, those already being created and plenty more ideas that have yet to be thought of. VR will change not just the future of the gaming industry, but the future of education, the music industry, and the movie industry as well.
