Many surveys have indicated that uptime is number one factor when choosing a web host and although most, if not all, web hosting services \u201cpromise\u201d 99.99% uptime, it\u2019s not the case with our case-study.<\/p>\n<p>According to our latest research, the average uptime of 32 shared web hosting providers is 99.59%. That\u2019s approximately 35 hours 32 minutes of downtime per year, per website.<\/p>\n<p>And downtime even happens to <a href=\"http:\/\/iwgcr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/downtime-statistics-current-1.3.pdf\">online giants<\/a>. A Dun &#038; Bradstreet study found that nearly 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies experience a <a href=\"http:\/\/dynamic.globalscape.com\/files\/whitepaper_DevastatingDowntime.pdf\">minimum of 1.6 hours<\/a> of downtime every week.<\/p>\n<p>As a rule of thumb, if you are experiencing an uptime of 99.90% or below, you should switch your web host. A good web host should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-prime-day-website-issues-cost-it-millions-in-lost-sales-2018-7\">provide you with an uptime<\/a> of at least 99.94%.<\/p>\n<p>To run this series of tests, we have signed up for all of the 32 web hosting providers as a regular user, using the cheapest plan available. After that, we set up a basic WordPress website and start monitoring them with Pingdom.com. (Tools like Pingdom or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appoptics.com\/application-performance-monitoring\">Appoptics<\/a> let you regularly check if a website or app is available.) Our uptime check interval was set to 1 minute, which means all of the sites are scanned every minute to get the most accurate statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that many hosts don\u2019t define uptime like that, so they will often refuse to pay out on the guarantee because they say it was \u201cplanned maintenance\u201d etc.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<table
