Lann and Reynn learn that they once were powerful Mirage Keepers, masters in controlling and battling Mirages. They led an army of these Mirages, monsters who roam through the land of Grymoire, yet somehow lost all of them, along with their memories. Now, they set off on a quest to regain their memory, and stop the threat looming over Grymoire, home to small Lilikin and big Jiants.

Final Fantasy and Pokémon’s lovechild

World of Final Fantasy is an installment in the famous JRPG franchise of Final Fantasy. World of Final Fantasy is not part of the main series, but is a spin-off, bringing characters from all Final Fantasy games, old to new, together in one game. An homage to a series that has been around for thirty years, and still considered one of the best JRPG franchises to exist. The classic turn-based gameplay we’ve come to know and love is fully present in World of Final Fantasy, with some additions like ability-mapping, so you don’t have to enter a menu to choose which skill to use, speeding up the grind present. The gameplay of World of Final Fantasy should speak to any Final Fantasy fan.

The major addition to the mix of gameplay elements are the Mirages. These monsters roam around the world of Grymoire, all referencing to monsters and villains from the Final Fantasy games. The Mirages can be captured by Lann and Reynn to help them in battle, much like the other major player in the JRPG genre, Pokémon. World of Final Fantasy is best described as the love child of Final Fantasy and Pokémon. Like Pokémon, the Mirages need to be leveled up to unlock new skills and even transformations, making them even more powerful. Mirages are engaged automatically, as you can’t see them, but without the tall grass for them to hide in.

But unlike Pokémon, Lann and Reynn do not fight with just one or two monsters at their side. In World of Final Fantasy, Mirages are categorized in sizes: Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. Lann and Reynn can both make a stack of three, including themselves and the Mirages. Small goes on top, then Medium, then Large. The twins can change between Lilikin- and Jiant-size, Lilikin counting as Medium, Jiant as Large. These stacks of three have their health bar, action points, stats, abilities, strengths and weaknesses combined.

Grymoire’s uncontrollable side

Stacking correctly, by matching Mirages with the same type of ability for example, unlocks powerful abilities which normally wouldn’t be accessible using less powerful Mirages. Extra Large Mirages do not fit into stacks, but these extremely powerful Mirages can be summoned and maintained for as long as Lann and Reynn have enough Action Points(AP). To add to the twins’ already impressive arsenal, Champions can be unlocked by playing the game. These Champions are residents of Grymoire, consisting entirely of characters from previous installments in the franchise, and are only available after filling a gauge by winning battles. When available, a Champion unleashes an ultimate ability, devastating the enemy or giving your stacks major boons, turning the tide of battle in your favor.

A few things about the game gripe me, the major complaint being the dungeons that are too linear. Support skills learned by Mirages give you access to the dungeons’ secret areas. But if you keep track of the Mirages that accompany you, most of the secret areas can be cleared in the first dungeon run. More exploration possibilities would’ve added a lot. Another complaint I have is the PC port. While the game runs great on my aging set-up, the lack of graphical customization could be a problem for people with old set-ups. The lack of key rebinding forces the player to play with a controller, again a problem for people who don’t own one.

https://medium.com/media/cc2b51c5418f61b3ab27ac8e64713375/href

World of Final Fantasy is true homage to the Final Fantasy series. The gameplay is recognizable, yet still fresh due to the addition of the Mirages. The world of Grymoire is packed full of references to the great characters, monsters and moments of the Final Fantasy games. I have played quite a few of them, but not all, yet I am sure that I have missed a lot of references. Even the Mirages’ descriptions make continuous references. The story, while quirky at times and seems to aim at a younger audience, is enjoyable to play through. Definitely recommended for any Final Fantasy fan.

4/5

Reviewed for PC

Review — World of Final Fantasy was originally published in Tasta on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Powered by WPeMatico

World of Final Fantasy is a loving tribute bringing beloved heroes and monsters from the iconic series together.
