Oh\u2026 Sir!! The Insult Simulator <\/em>is a remake of Oh\u2026 Sir!!<\/em>, which was the result of the Global Game Jam, an event where game developers are tasked with creating a game from scratch in 48 hours. Oh\u2026 Sir!!<\/em> released in 2015 as a free game and has since been rebranded and reworked in Oh\u2026 Sir!! The Insult Simulator<\/em> and is available for the humble price of just over \u20ac2 on various platforms.<\/p>\n

Your mother was a\u00a0hamster\u2026<\/h4>\n

The point of the game? As the title suggests, you have to insult either the A.I. or other players in oral combat, roasting them with flair and draining them of their will to live. The mechanics are fairly simple: you start by choosing a character?\u2014?like Sir Knight or Mr. J. Shufflebottom. Then, each player takes turns choosing from among a list of nine words or short sentences, in order to combine them in one elaborate insult. Well-formed insults drain HP from your opponent, while making up nonsense and forming grave grammatical errors will result in stuttering gibberish and will have no effect at all. Selecting \u201c\u2026\u201d will end your turn but will make it possible to finish your insult in the next one, making it possible to come up with even harsher\u00a0slander.<\/p>\n

Every character is self-conscious about something specific, for example his or her style of clothing, which can be seen as their weak points: certain insults will have a super-effective impact on them. Using the same sentences in follow-up insults?\u2014?like using \u201cyour mother\u201d multiple times in a row?\u2014?will result in combos, dealing even more damage. Every character can also choose from two unique sentences which can be refreshed by taking a sip of tea every\u00a0turn.<\/p>\n

Due to the turn-based aspect, the game is much more strategic than it may seem at first glance. It feels like playing a drafting card or board game?\u2014?think 7 Wonders Duel <\/em>or even Magic: the Gathering <\/em>drafting if you will?\u2014?where you have to make conscious and thought-out choices if you want to craft a unique and effective insult. Even Cards Against Humanity <\/em>comes close, where you have to complete a sentence with another one from a limited stack of\u00a0choices.<\/p>\n

\u2026and your father smelled of elderberries<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Monty Python references in the subtitles are not for naught: it\u2019s clear where developer Vile Monarch got their inspiration: in the first level of the tournament mode, you end up in a pet store with a dead parrot, which was supposedly still alive when you left that same pet store about 30 minutes before. You start arguing with the shop owner, who, of course, doesn\u2019t think anything is wrong. Instead of ending up in fisticuffs, you start of a battle of wits and words. Does this setup sound familiar? If so, Oh\u2026 Sir!! <\/em>will have more than enough in store for you, as one Monty Python reference will be alternated with another. If not, well, that means there is a serious hole in your cultural background that needs to be\u00a0filled!<\/p>\n

After defeating five A.I. opponents in the tournament mode, you unlock a new character and can opt for a replay. The A.I. is decent enough, but it\u2019s still A.I., and after a few tries it\u2019s not too difficult to outplay them. If you pick your options right, the A.I. will more often than not come up with some insult that doesn\u2019t make any sense at all\u2026 Soon you\u2019ll crave for some stronger competition, as having to choose from the quite limited vocabulary becomes tiresome rather quickly, no matter how funny some of them may be. The addition of a multiplayer mode mitigates this somewhat. Insulting real people?\u2014?albeit still hidden behind your chosen alias?\u2014?is not as easy as insulting NPCs. At least this is somewhat reminiscent of real life. Why can\u2019t all disputes be settled with some well-thought out roasts? Wars could be won by a well-chosen insult (although wars could be started like that as well, I suppose\u2026)<\/p>\n

The verdict<\/h4>\n

Oh\u2026 Sir!! <\/em>is a nice little gimmick, what else can you expect from a game designed and created in about 48 hours and with such a low price tag? But the developers did an amazing job coming up with a unique take on the popular drafting games of today. The Monty Python references are icing on the cake for any British-comedy fan and will induce more than one chuckle. The multiplayer mode might even give the game with longevity, as there is certainly room for a competitive aspect.<\/p>\n

Personally, Oh\u2026 Sir!!<\/em> doesn\u2019t provide me with enough content to capture my attention for longer than an hour at a time. But I can certainly see the appeal, and I firmly believe that a dedicated player base can keep this game relevant for a long time to come. If you are a Monty Pyton fan, this game is basically a must\u00a0have.<\/p>\n
