But the company is also looking to appeal to people\u00a0who might otherwise be inclined to go with the rival PlayStation 4 or Xbox One consoles.<\/p>\n

That intention was\u00a0on full display this morning as the company debuted what it\u2019s describing as its first-ever Super Bowl ad. With a hard-charging soundtrack \u2014 \u201cBeliever\u201d by rock band Imagine Dragons \u2014 the ad shows the Switch converting among its multiple\u00a0modes, from handheld device to a living room game console. Featured games include \u201cLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,\u201d \u201cJust Dance 2017,\u201d \u201cSplatoon 2,\u201d and several others.<\/p>\n

The company released an extended cut of the Super Bowl ad this morning, above, following the recent tradition of Super Bowl advertisers debuting their spots in advance of the big game.<\/p>\n

Valve has been teasing virtual reality games since last year, sildenafil<\/a> but on Friday the Bellevue-based company finally gave details about what\u2019s in store.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get your hopes up: the details are still vague (there\u2019s no timeline on when to expect them), seek<\/a> but founder Gabe Newell did confirm to Eurogamer<\/a> that Valve is building three VR games. The company isn\u2019t just putting its toes in the VR pool, either; it\u2019s diving right in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I say we\u2019re building three games, we\u2019re building three\u00a0full games, not experiments,\u201d Newell said at a media roundtable.<\/p>\n

At Valve\u2019s Dota 2 tournament in August, Newell said he was spending most of his time<\/a> working on VR technology. Newell encouraged fans to demo some of Valve\u2019s VR games at the tournament, asking them to email him with feedback.<\/p>\n

Valve\u2019s current work, however, doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s repackaging the companies existing games into VR. Speaking to the press, Newell said there was \u201cabsolutely nothing compelling\u201d about running old games on a new system.<\/p>\n

\u201cVR is not going to be a success at all if people are just taking existing content and putting it into a VR space,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

The three new games will be built on both Source 2 and Unity, and Newell said the company is designing the hardware at the same time that its designing software. By working on them simultaneously, Newell hopes Valve will be able to build better games. He compared the strategy to that of famous Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.<\/p>\n

Miyamoto\u2019s Nintendo reshaped the world of gaming, and Newell believes VR will have the same influence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like we\u2019ve been stuck with mouse and keyboard for a really long time and that the opportunities to build much more interesting kinds of experiences for gamers were there, we just need to sort of expand what we can do,\u201d Valve\u2019s CEO said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not about being in hardware, it\u2019s about building better games. It\u2019s about taking bigger leaps forward with the kinds of games that we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded in 1996 by former Microsofties Newell and Mike Harrington, Valve has grown into an absolute powerhouse in the gaming industry, powered in part by it Steam gaming platform. Based in Bellevue, Valve is said to be valued at upwards of $4 billion.<\/p>\n
