After that, they asked me to redesign their\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12AVOGgf72xYtzb1Kl2ljQTkg.gif?w=900\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Working on the new\u00a0website<\/h3>\n<h4>Understanding the\u00a0company<\/h4>\n<p>Arquitetura Nacional was founded in 2010 by three architects. Over the years, they\u2019ve accomplished to be seen as one of the most talented studios from Porto Alegre and from Brazil. Many of their projects were posted on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com.br\/br\">ArchDaily<\/a> and also on other publications around the world. They are one of the few studios in Porto Alegre who uses BIM technology (Building Information Modeling) and their project decisions aim at reducing\u00a0costs.<\/p>\n<h4>Analysis of current\u00a0website<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Site makes all projects look too similar because of small thumbs and image thumbs\u00a0choices<\/li>\n<li>Logo on the left is confusing and doesn\u2019t match their identity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/logo-placement-brand-recall\/\">Users are 89% more likely to remember logos shown in the traditional top-left position than logos placed on the\u00a0right.<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Site doesn\u2019t explain the studio\u2019s history\/methodology\/services<\/li>\n<li>Horizontally scrolling on project pages confuses the\u00a0user<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t have projects separated by filters, which are important for an architecture studio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12AKk6rITBgsi0S_IGZBl1u8g.gif?w=900\"><figcaption>Landing page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12AomHhXijOPy8O9mWGqOiLGg.gif?w=900\"><figcaption>Project page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Interviews<\/h4>\n<p>I had time to make quick interviews with the studios CEO\u2019s, architects and prospects. Below, are my objectives with each one and the questions I prepared.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>CEO\u2019s<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My objective was to better understand what they wanted to improve on the\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What it is they are having trouble communicating?<\/li>\n<li>What do wish the website could do that it currently doesn\u2019t?<\/li>\n<li>What would you add or delete from the current\u00a0version?<\/li>\n<li>What support is available to\u00a0you?<\/li>\n<li>Is there another thing you want to\u00a0add?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Architects<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My objective was to maybe grasp possibilities not yet explored by other architecture studios.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tell me about what you like to see on an architecture studio\u00a0website.<\/li>\n<li>What do you think is the \u2018minimum\u2019 an architecture studio website must\u00a0have?<\/li>\n<li>What type of information you think is important to have on architecture studios websites?<\/li>\n<li>What could be more explored on architecture studios websites?<\/li>\n<li>Try to remember an occasion when an website didn\u2019t have the information you were looking for. Do you remember what information was? What feelings did you\u00a0have?<\/li>\n<li>Is there another thing you want to\u00a0add?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Clients<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My objective was to understand what eventual clients would search for on an architecture studio website. This one I had to do online, so it was short questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What would you look for on an architecture studio websites if you were looking for one to\u00a0hire?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of information would matter for you to choose between one or\u00a0another?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Summary of interview\u2019s insights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Present information on an easy and quick\u00a0way<\/li>\n<li>Explain which services the studio\u00a0offers<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAbout us\u201d: page might be a key to get a client that gets identified with the things the studio believes\u00a0in<\/li>\n<li>Navigation: split the projects into categories<\/li>\n<li>Projects: clear presentation with images and also details if\u00a0possible<\/li>\n<li>Improve thumbnails pictures: there were more appealing pictures than the ones used at the\u00a0time<\/li>\n<li>Improve the texts: it\u2019s more interesting to read the techniques and the objectives than a too abstract text about the\u00a0concept<\/li>\n<li>Improve the projects sequence: put the already build project\u00a0first<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>The outcome<\/h4>\n<p>From the beginning, I told them I didn\u2019t know code well enough to develop a website, and they said it wasn\u2019t a problem because they also would prefer to stick with Cargo or a similar platform.<\/p>\n<p>I started with some low-fidelity sketches and, after that, went first to Cargo Collective to see if there were any templates that could match my initial idea. I then prefered to use <a href=\"http:\/\/squarespace.com\/\">Squarespace<\/a> platform because it is more flexible than Cargo and offered templates that fit better my idea than the ones Cargo\u00a0has.<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12A6GelmwswBOfWRFDZ1iWcyQ.jpeg?w=900\"><\/figure>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12AwrEG_RHC399SpzBxngBnFw.jpeg?w=900\"><figcaption><em>Low-fidelity mockups<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few samples of the final redesign:<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12Ax0ijRok13vxf3ayRfHVzkw.gif?w=900\"><figcaption>Landing page \/ Category\u00a0hoover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.taterboy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/12A9K7CbsR9tIvys-Q7w-bK_Q.gif?w=900\"><figcaption>Project page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Things I was able to\u00a0improve:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make thumbnails bigger and more attractive<\/li>\n<li>Vertical scrolling on landing, project and other\u00a0pages<\/li>\n<li>Projects images better positioned within a\u00a0grid<\/li>\n<li>Categories on the top of the\u00a0page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things I was not able to\u00a0improve:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAbout\u201d, \u201cservices\u201d and texts: the studio will continue the project but does not have planned on when they will rewrite \/ improve project\u2019s texts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>User testing<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Users have responded well <\/strong>to the website\u2019s simplistic redesign. Even though there was not a radical change, the people previously interviewed said they found what they were looking for more easily; that the pictures on projects pages are more interesting now and that the contact page now feels more personal than the older\u00a0one.<\/p>\n<h3>Lessons<\/h3>\n<p>I only had a short time to run interviews for the project, and it lacks interviews with development and construction companies, which are also studio\u2019s stakeholders. I believe their thoughts could bring more perspectives that were not seen. In general, the website turned out to be similar to what I had in\u00a0mind.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Squarspace platform doesn\u2019t offer the option to separate by tags as the client wanted, I was able to construct the categories in a way that might not be the better when thinking about experience and interface, but it still\u00a0works.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first project I started keeping clearly in mind the <strong>\u201cuser experience\u201d theory and methodologies<\/strong>, and it turned out to be something I was already very familiar to. I still have a lot of study to do on the topic, but this first and simple project only enhanced my will of working with\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>The problems I couldn\u2019t solve the way I wanted only <strong>increased my desire of learning front-end <\/strong>(and also back-end after that). Still, when compared to the previous website, I believe it has improved a lot and reached the objetives previously determined. The information is clearer and the brand\u2019s identity was enhanced through the new layout.
