Augmented Reality Mixed Reality Virtual Reality
Day 0

A new day for PaperChase in the world of Virtual Reality
About two weeks ago we announced on the PaperChase Facebook page that we were accepted into Facebook’s Oculus LaunchPad Program. LaunchPad is an amazing program that seeks to support people and businesses from underrepresented groups with access to education and resources. Over the next 9 weeks we have been challenged to create a compelling proposal for a new VR game featuring our unique cinematic story. When Josiah and I set out to make PaperChase we first created an amazing story. While PaperChase went on to be an amazing success with nearly 3 million downloads, we never got a chance to tell the PaperChase story. Attending the LaunchPad program has re-ignited the hope that we will see a new version of PaperChase, one with the cinematic story and this time in VR.
We arrived back from Facebook headquarters on Monday morning to find this:

Our office had been broken into and vandalized. Luckily it seems the alarm scared away the thieves, and no equipment was stolen. Nevertheless, we have spent hundreds of dollars beefing up the security and fixing our windows.
I had planned on spending the day brainstorming with my team, creating an awesome plan and getting started with development. Instead my day was cut short dealing with broken glass, CSI and calling ADT. It was my intention to write about “Day Zero” as the first day. I thought it would be cleaver to talk about how arrays in programming are zero based lists and the idea of creating a clean start. But , that wasn’t going to be the case. It didn’t seem like I was going to get my empty “Day Zero”. Instead I began preparing for a day filed with everything that I didn’t want to deal with. I poured my face into my hands, and began to do the one thing I knew didn’t involve thinking : breathing. For the last 5 years, as I have been struggling to grow my business this has been my practice. When the list things that I needed to attend to become bigger than I can handle, I breathe.
After a few hours my son Josiah appeared. Then Erik my lead Unity engineer walked in the door. My team was here. The events of the morning were now the past and they were all anxious to hear about LaunchPad. We connected over hot Ramen and egg rolls. I didn’t need the ZERO, I had my family and friends around me. It wasn’t long before were talking about LaunchPad and PaperChase VR. We have a lot of great ideas and we hope to share them with everyone very soon.

Day 0 was originally published in PaperChase on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
