Vagabond — A short, personal reflective game. — Dev Diary #1

Classroom Scene block out. (The layout of the classroom will change each time the player walks into it)

The Game:

Vagabond is intended to be a short experience driven game that tells a story of a boy who is constantly moving to new homes and school throughout his childhood.

The player will have only a few input functions that moves the boy between scenes. As they continue to play and move through scenes, the colour contrast will slowly fade into grey scale and the dialogue between NPC’s will become less and less coherent as they boy slowly spirals into a world of indifference and depression.

Only when the boy gets his first job and is complemented by a customer who puts in a good word for him, then will he break free from his despair and see the world in a new light.

This game is a small adaptation of my own personal experience that I felt should be shared.

Home Scene block out. (Every time the player enters the boys house, the layout and arrangement will be different.)

The Premise:

The screenshots provided are just a rough block out that I have made that is intended to give me a reference and jumping off point before I begin to make the sprite assets in Photoshop.

I want the scenes to have a simple layout, not only for easier scoping, but so that when players enter these scenes, they have less visuals to retain and remember so that when they move back into a scene they have previously left, they should immediately notice that the layout and scene has changes and that they are in a new environment.

Street Scene Block out. (Every time the player leave the Home and School, they will enter the street scene which will be the first scene players notice has changed.)

One the player has moved through multiple scenes, they should realise by now the theme that is being laid out before them. The theme being; that the boy is constantly being moved around to new homes and schools.

As they move, the colour contrast will slowly fade into grey scale to further enhance the emotion of depression and sadness that all this moving around is causing the young boy.

Once they have moved around enough, they boy will be given his first job were he interacts with a elderly women. This women will have such a positive impact on the boy that it will break him out off is stupor and breathe new life and meaning into him. Through this, the boy will begin to see the world as colourful and happy again.
