Dev Diary: Playtesting #3

After our third play testing session, a few changes have been made and are described below.

The Game:

Up Ship Creek is an augmented board game designed to have three separate expansions, each with there own unique story line and catastrophes. For my groups story line, we went decided upon a runaway ship on a collision course with the sun.

What has changed since last play testing:

Based on the player feedback last session, numerous and major changes have come about.

  1. What: Added unique item cards to each scenario.

How: Designed cards with the intent to throw a “spanner” in their planing and/or provide them with a useful card with strong bonuses.

Why: We wanted our scenario to have its own unique play style and that further strengthens our story board of colliding the the sun. We wanted these cards to be useful and integral to completing the mission with the bonus of keep the card after completing said mission.

2. What: The script for the A.I has gone through a massive update. As a result, requirements for crisis have changed.

Why: The film department and the actor who would play Floyd (A.I) decided on filming the scripts sooner than expected. As a result, big adjustments to the script and therefore, the over all requirements for each crisis. Although this wasn’t too big of a hiccup, it did cause further adjustments to be updated and logged in several already existing docs.

Notes During Play Testing:

This play test was perhaps the most enjoyable and talkative one i’v’e seen yet. The three fresh new players were laughing and coordinating right off the bat. Making decisions and planing out their attack plan and they were even taking high risks for high rewards that actually paid off in their favor. They manged to make it through the tutorial, crisis A1,2,3 before unfortunately having to leave just s they began the End crisis. They enjoyed the script and easily adjusted to the learning curve.

However, after the good times had past a startling realization was made; they were apparently forgetting to keep track of their health properly, Whoops.

The graphic design team in charge of creating the board also need to make repairs to the design. The font was illegible for certain characters and there were a few misspelling.

Next Time on Play Testing:

The Zone cards are in need of a urgent update to better reflect the more polished mission and mechanics of the core game.

A few more item cards are in need of stats and flavor text.

Hazard cards and condition cards need a boost on the difficulty scale to better hinder players who pick classes such s the Engineer or Janitor.
