10 Website Design Trends That Are Fading (Thankfully)

Website design trends can be a lot of fun to experiment with and incorporate into projects, but if you aren’t careful these elements can add a dated look to projects. Sometimes trends fade out as quickly as they rush in! Here, we’re going to look at some website design trends that are fading. (And that’s a good thing.) If you have these elements on your site, it might be time to consider a refresh. 1. Not-So-Subtle Shadows Drop shadows don’t need to be so obvious. As with many other design trends, there seems to be an ebb and flow between extremes. Designers went from skeuomorphic elements to flat designs to long shadows to bulky shadows. Now, more subtle shadows are starting to come into play (thankfully). The goals of a shadow on an element should be to help add a layer of depth or lift it off the background to Read the full article…

Text To Speech And Back Again With AWS (Part 2)

Text To Speech And Back Again With AWS (Part 2) Text To Speech And Back Again With AWS (Part 2) Philip Kiely 2019-10-02T12:30:59+02:002019-10-02T11:05:11+00:00 This is the second half of a series on transforming content between text and speech on AWS. In part one, we used Amazon Polly to narrate blog posts and embedded the content in a website using an audio tag. In this article, we will use speech-to-text to draft transcripts of podcasts and interviews for publication. Finally, we will evaluate the overall accuracy of these format-transformation technologies by running a few samples through round-trip transcriptions. Speech-To-Text Project In 2012, Patrick McKenzie (a.k.a. patio11, of Kalzumeus and Stripe) and Ramit Sethi (of I Will Teach You To Be Rich) sat down and recorded two hour-long podcasts. As I am a fan of both of their work, I probably would have listened to the podcasts, but I definitely wouldn’t have Read the full article…

Honk: Why ‘Untitled Goose Game’ has become one of the most unexpected success stories in gaming

In a month that was riddled with big video game releases, the most unexpected success story of September turned out to be the indie game about being a very rude goose. Untitled Goose Game, as of this writing, is the No. 1 digital game on the Nintendo eShop, beating out big-ticket titles including Nintendo’s Link’s Awakening remake, the rerelease of the classic Jedi Outcast, and the long-awaited Definitive Edition of the popular JRPG Dragon Quest XI. (It’s also available on the PC/Mac, as an Epic Games Store exclusive) The Nintendo eShop Best Sellers list as of October 1st, 2019. (GeekWire screenshot) It’s been an unusually killer summer for games, especially on the Switch, and September saw several other high-profile, hotly anticipated cross-platform releases, such as Borderlands 3, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, and NBA 2K20. Untitled Goose Game’s popularity would be remarkable even if it had come out in a quieter Read the full article…

How to pair a PS4 or Xbox controller with your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Android device

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The DualShock 4 and Xbox One controllers were originally made to work on their respective consoles, but thanks to Apple’s recent software updates, you can more easily pair them via Bluetooth with your iOS 13 device, iPadOS tablet, or your Apple TV via tvOS 13. Android 10 makes it super easy to pair either controller, too, and you can pair with previous versions of Android and iOS as well. This is probably of particular interest If you subscribe to Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass, as you can play several of the games on offer from either service with a controller. Fortnite paved the way for expanding controller support when it arrived on select phones, but the PS4 and Xbox controllers (though not all Xbox controllers) work on mobile with… Read the full article…

Pokémon’s saddest creature, Mimikyu, finally gets its due

Every time some very kind person mistakenly compliments the cute, anxious-looking Mimikyu tattooed on my forearm for Pikachu, I become giddy because I get to talk about Pokémon’s best. Now, after trailing in Pikachu’s shadow for too long, The Pokémon Company is talking about him, too. The company’s social media team is dedicating the entire month of October to celebrate Mimikyu, who first made its debut in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon in November 2016. The company tweeted its plans to pay homage to “this lonely, terrifying Pokémon — who really just wants to snuggle” all month long, but didn’t suggest what that entails. There could be some cool Mimikyu-related swag (perhaps a new plushie?) or maybe there’s nothing at all beyond a series… Read the full article…

Apple Arcade is a home for premium games that lost their place on mobile

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge For more than six years, designer Zach Gage has been toying with an idea for a game where players explore dangerous dungeons, but did so through various cards stacked in a grid, rifling through piles to heal or fight a monster. It’s an idea he played with endlessly, until around two years ago when he turned it into a functioning prototype that he’d show only trusted friends. But Gage wanted to do something bigger than he was used to. He made a name for himself with twists on existing games like Sage Solitaire and Really Bad Chess, but he also typically developed games solo. His new idea, he thought, would be perfect for a bigger production, with lots of great art to showcase monster designs and spell cards. The problem was that the state… Read the full article…

Borderlands 3: SAG-AFTRA Responds to Gearbox’s Statement on Troy Baker

UPDATE (10/1/19) –  SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) has sent IGN a response to Gearbox Software’s statement from the story below. “We are fully aware of the anti-labor, right-to-work-for-less laws that help explain why Texas has more minimum-wage workers than any state in the Union. Employers in Texas and other right-to-work-for-less states nevertheless routinely work under SAG-AFTRA agreements with no legal obstacle at all. To the extent that Gearbox’s statement reflects legitimate ignorance, Gearbox could easily have asked that question during their discussions with SAG-AFTRA, which they did not. Read the full article…
