Roblox announces new game-creation tools and marketplace, $100M in 2019 developer revenue

A week after gaming platform Roblox announced its new milestone of 100 million monthly users — topping Minecraft — the company said at its fifth annual developer conference that its developer community is on track to earn $100 million in 2019. Roblox also introduced a new set of developer tools for building immersive, more realistic 3D experiences; detailed its plans to make its developer software fully cloud-based; unveiled a new Developer Marketplace where creators can set their development assets and tools to others; and more. Over the past decade or so, Roblox has grown to become a $2.5 billion company, with roughly half of U.S. children ages 9 through 12 playing on its platform. The company provides game-creation tools via Roblox Studio, which developers use to build their own games for people to play. Roblox doesn’t pay the developers for their work — rather, the developers generate revenue through virtual Read the full article…

Game Review: Nintendo’s ‘Fire Emblem: Three Houses’ is well made, but way too easy for experienced players

(Fire Emblem: Three Houses Screenshots) I don’t dislike Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but I don’t feel challenged by it — and that’s weird. Since 1990, the Fire Emblem series has been putting out notoriously difficult turn-based strategy games as Nintendo exclusives, though they only began being officially released outside Japan in 2003. The games are meant to replicate the feel of grid-based tactical combat in a tabletop fantasy RPG, with a focus on individual characters as your units rather than armies or battalions. Made as a collaboration between Intelligent Systems and the third-party studio Koei Tecmo, Three Houses for the Nintendo Switch is the biggest Fire Emblem yet, with better graphics, a broader scope, and an initially lighter tone than most of what came before it. In a series of dark, low-fantasy war dramas, the first 20 hours of Three Houses are a high school comedy with fight scenes. (If Read the full article…

Minecraft’s ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack’ is canceled due to technical difficulties

Minecraft developer Mojang is officially canceling the game’s anticipated “Super Duper Graphics Pack,” originally announced back at E3 2017 as a downloadable update for the popular crafting game. The graphics pack promised a massive overhaul for Minecraft, bringing features like realistic lighting and shadows, reflective water surfaces, and more lifelike flora and fauna, along with the promise of full 4K resolution for some devices like the Xbox One X. According to Mojang’s post announcing the cancellation, “the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned,” with the studio unhappy with how it performed across devices. The update was originally planned to release in fall 2017, then pushed to 2018, before being canceled… Read the full article…

How to make sure you’re buying the new Nintendo Switch with improved battery life

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge The new hardware revision of the Nintendo Switch is now making its way to retail stores. It features a newer, more efficient CPU than the original launch console, which results in significantly longer battery life ranging between 4.5 and nine hours. (The original Switch can last between 2.5 and 6.5 hours.) Otherwise, the Nintendo Switch “v2” — not to be confused with the upcoming Switch Lite — hasn’t changed much: it’s got the same design and same screen. That means there’s no easy way to distinguish the new, longer-lasting model from the original unless you know where to look and what to look for. Look at the box The easiest way to spot the new Switch is its packaging. The box for the original hardware has a white background, but this… Read the full article…

How to use Xbox Game Pass on your Windows 10 PC

Microsoft Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service that offers on-demand access to dozens of games. It’s a great value if you like to play and discover new games, and now that it’s on PC instead of solely being a console experience, your subscription can follow you from your Xbox One to your Windows 10 computer. However, the expansion to Windows PCs hasn’t been seamless. While an Xbox One lets you easily access your Game Pass right on the home dashboard, finding Game Pass games on a PC is a whole other story. There are two ways to find Game Pass games on PC. The first, and easiest, requires you to download a free app, though I think it will be worth the effort. The second method doesn’t require any additional installations, but… Read the full article…

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw Review

In spacefaring sci-fi shows and movies – eg Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica – there are two very different kinds of space combat: the slug-fests where battleships duke it out with massive broadsides, and the fast, twitchy dogfighting of fighters buzzing around them. 2015’s Rebel Galaxy is an excellent RPG built around the former, and now its prequel spin-off, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, is an action game that specializes in the latter. It’s a flashy, modern revival of the gameplay style of classics like Wing Commander: Privateer and Freelancer, and it even all but eliminates the most annoying part of dogfighting with a creative and entirely optional piloting assist. The campaign missions are stretched over an open region of space that’s probably two sizes too large, but there’s more than enough going on to make Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a stellar single-player game. Splinter Cell Might Come Back in an Unexpected Way

Despite not having a mainline game in some time, Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten about Splinter Cell. Even Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot still talks about a possible return for Sam Fisher, but it might not be on a traditional video game platform. Speaking with Chinese video game publication, Gamer Sky, Guillemot spoke briefly about a possible new Splinter Cell game. However, he stressed that any new Splinter Cell title from Ubisoft could be in the form of an experiment on different devices. “On Splinter Cell there will be some new type of experiences, but more on different devices,” Guillemot said in a video interview. “So, we are working a lot on the brand today to come back at one point.” Read the full article…
