The Essential Guide To JavaScript’s Newest Data Type: BigInt The Essential Guide To JavaScript’s Newest Data Type: BigInt Faraz Kelhini 2019-07-22T14:00:59+02:002019-07-23T11:06:23+00:00 The BigInt data type aims to enable JavaScript programmers to represent integer values larger than the range supported by the Number data type. The ability to represent integers with arbitrary precision is particularly important when performing mathematical operations on large integers. With BigInt, integer overflow will no longer be an issue. Additionally, you can safely work with high-resolution timestamps, large integer IDs, and more without having to use a workaround. BigInt is currently a stage 3 proposal. Once added to the specification, it will become the second numeric data type in JavaScript, which will bring the total number of supported data types to eight: Boolean Null Undefined Number BigInt String Symbol Object In this article, we will take a good look at BigInt and see how it can help Read the full article…

The Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con drift problem, explained

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Nintendo Switch owners have been experiencing problems with the console’s removable Joy-Con controllers for months, with users reporting weird joystick drifting problems that cause false inputs and have been steadily growing over time as original Switch machines grow older. A recent report by Kotaku shined a light on the Joy-Con drift issue, but if you’re looking for more information on the problem, here’s the current situation. What is “Joy-Con drift”? Joy-Con drift is an issue that Switch owners have been encountering over the last few months that causes the analog sticks on the controllers to randomly move around and input commands to the console, even when they’re not being physically moved. Overwatch’s next hero is Sigma, a scientist who controls gravity

Blizzard has revealed the 31st hero to join the ranks of Overwatch. Today, the company released a short animated trailer that showcases Sigma, a scientist who appears to have survived some sort of dramatic event that left him with the ability to control gravity in some fashion. “Gravity is a harness,” Sigma says in the trailer. “I have harnessed the harness.” Blizzard also describes him as “an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware that he is being used as a living weapon.” Unfortunately, the animated clip is mostly a teaser that doesn’t actually show Sigma in the game, so we don’t know anything about his special abilities or even what class of hero he is. Sigma follows the release of the combat… Read the full article…

Valve’s massive Dota 2 tournament, which is heading into its ninth annual iteration, features a prize pool that’s largely crowdfunded, a tradition dating back to 2013. Back in May, Valve released a “battle pass” for the game, which is available at different tiers and earns players special features like rare in-game cosmetics and special limited events. A quarter of that money is used to fill out the prize pool for Dota 2’s biggest tournament of the year. Last year’s event, which took place in Vancouver, featured a then-record $25.5 million purse. The $30 million milestone is… Read the full article…

How Satoru Iwata Saved Earthbound from Development Hell

To this day, Earthbound is a beloved classic that belongs in any “Best RPGs of all time” list – but without help from the late Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, it might have never been finished. Iwata-san, a book recently published in Japan by Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi’s company Hobonichi, tells the story of Satoru Iwata’s life, mostly through his own words. While he passed away on July 11 in 2015, the book is a rearrangement of interviews with Iwata that were published on Itoi’s website Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shimbun. The book also includes new interviews with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi on how they remember Iwata. Read the full article…
