Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Review

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite may not be the wizarding world game of my dreams (hopefully that leaked Harry Potter RPG trailer is more than a concept) but I’m pleasantly surprised with how much I’m enjoying Niantic’s latest augmented reality “walking RPG.” This followup to the phenomenally successful Pokemon GO does a lot of heavy lifting to justify its storyline that makes the actual idea behind it a little wonky, but the many, many layers of exploration and collection it encourages have kept me engaged on a daily basis… so far. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is, in a nutshell, Pokemon GO but with wizard tchotchkes instead of collectable pocket monsters. The longer version of the description reads a bit more like a J.K. Rowling lore tweet: in the quiet, post-Deathly Hallows epilogue lives of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, a great calamity has hit the wizarding world and threatens to tear down Read the full article…

Better Search UX Through Microcopy

Better Search UX Through Microcopy Better Search UX Through Microcopy Andrew Millen 2019-06-28T12:30:59+02:002019-06-28T11:07:48+00:00 It’s hard to overstate the importance of web search. Searching is as old as the Internet itself, and by some measures, even older. A well-designed search benefits both you and your users; it increases conversions, reduces bounce rates, and improves the user experience. Search is especially important on large scale sites and e-commerce experiences, where the majority of revenue comes from search-driven sessions. Studies show that up to 50% of users go straight to the internal search bar of a website, and that 15% outright prefer using the search function to browsing the hierarchical menu. This means that for all the love and care that goes into determining the information architecture of a site, just as much has to go into designing the search experience. Complicating the problem is the fact that users’ search skills are flimsy Read the full article…

Flappy Royale turns Flappy Bird into Fortnite

Flappy Bird is a gaming legend and one of the most explosively popular mobile games ever made. But what if it were more like Fortnite? That’s the idea behind Flappy Royale, a new game from developers Orta Therox and Em Lazer-Walker (with contributions from Zach Gage). It mashes together the endless flapping gameplay of Flappy Bird with the last-bird-standing style of the battle royale genre that’s all the rage these days. Gameplay is simple, just like it was in the original game: tap on your bird to flap and dodge your way through some suspiciously Mario-esque pipes. Except the goal isn’t to survive as long as you can; it’s to survive longer than the other 99 players, all of whom you can see flapping alongside you in real time. And… Read the full article…

Final Fantasy XIV is making the jump to live action with a new TV series that is set to be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind, the studio that makes The Expanse and Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher show Said to be “inspired directly by the world and characters of the title’s fourteenth installment,” neither Square Enix nor the production companies have said much about what the show will be about or where it’ll take place relative to the ongoing MMO. We do know that popular elements of the franchise, including “magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos,” and the live-action debut of recurring character Cid will appear in the show. Technically, it’s the second live-action ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ show The show won’t be the first… Read the full article…

Apex Legends season 2 will arrive July 2nd with a better battle pass and massive map changes

Respawn’s sci-fi battle royale shooter Apex Legends is getting its next big update starting on July 2nd with the launch of its second seasonal battle pass, a new legend to play, and a slew of new changes to the map. Titled Battle Charge, the second season will introduce the first-ever structural changes to the King’s Canyon map and bring on new character Wattson, an engineer type who can build electricity traps. Wattson was first revealed at E3 earlier this month, but now we’re getting to see her backstory as it relates to the overall Apex Legends lore. Perhaps the most pivotal new change, however, is the introduction of large-scale monsters to the map, including the massive Leviathan beasts that roam in the water outside the island’s… Read the full article…
