Phones Keep Getting Larger: Here’s How to Design for Them

Phones keep getting ever-larger, there’s no denying it. Looking back at the original iPhone today, it seems incredulously small. But large phones come with new design considerations and requirements. Let’s dive into them. The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S10 5G comes out later this year. If your website design ready for it? The phone will feature a massive 6.7-inch display — the iPhone XS Max comes in at 6.5 inches, and many common devices are 5.5 inches or larger – making it important that you are creating something that renders well on what we used to call “phablets.” Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when it comes to designing for phone screens that just seem to keep getting bigger. Prioritize Content Don’t make users guess what’s important about mobile design. The upper two-thirds of the screen should clearly communicate the most important element of the design. Designing An Aspect Ratio Unit For CSS

Designing An Aspect Ratio Unit For CSS Designing An Aspect Ratio Unit For CSS Rachel Andrew 2019-03-11T15:00:41+01:002019-03-12T11:05:40+00:00 One of the things that come up again and again in CSS is the fact that there is no way to size things based on their aspect ratio. In particular when working with responsive designs, you often want to be able to set the width to a percentage and have the height correspond to some aspect ratio. This is something that the folks who are responsible for designing CSS (i.e. the CSS Working Group) have recently been discussing and a proposed solution was agreed upon at a recent CSSWG meeting in San Francisco. This is a new resolution, so we have no browser implementations yet, but I thought it would be worth writing up the proposal in case anyone in the wider web community could see a showstopping issue with it. Niantic’s Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a sorcerous smorgasbord for the Pokémon GO generation

Niantic’s follow-up to the absurdly popular Pokémon GO, the long-awaited Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, has one major drawback: unlike its predecessor, you can’t explain it in a single sentence. There’s so much to do in this game that it may repel some casual players — but while its depths of systems and collectibles may be nigh endless, don’t worry: you still basically just walk around doing wizard and witch stuff. We first reported the news that this was coming back in 2017. Last week I got to spend a short time playing the game at Niantic’s office in San Francisco, and while they didn’t reveal all their secrets, I saw enough to convince me that HP:WU (I await a catchier nickname, like PoGO) will be a huge time sink for any Harry Potter fan and will probably convert or cannibalize many players from GO. If you were worried this would Read the full article…

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a more complex Pokémon Go for superfans

For Niantic Labs’ next trick, the augmented reality game studio is diving head-first into another knotty fandom, the world of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, with scores of dedicated fans, a rich history of lore to explore, and untold storylines to tell. But this time, boiling down a massive fictional world into an easy-to-understand AR video game seems to have been a much more difficult task. That’s because Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is not very simple. In fact, it’s got numerous systems at work, all simultaneously competing for your attention and potentially obfuscating what it is that you might want to open the app to actually do. In the first demo of the game at Niantic’s San Francisco office last week, I was among a group of… Read the full article…

Improve your line work with these pro drawing tips

What I love about drawing is how you can capture the imagination. It’s the thing that keeps me fascinated. My specialty is hand-drawn illustration, and in particular, the creation of line work with dip pen and black Indian ink. In this workshop I’ll show how I create my own interpretation of Mephisto, the demonic antagonist in the German legend of Faust. I start with an underdrawing, on to which the line work is inked. Through this process I emphasise anything that conveys the fantasy noir atmosphere of the tale, in particular the hard lighting.  Unlike digital drawing, inking with a traditional dip pen only allows the draughtsman to push forward. It’s a live take with every mark of the pen. Every nib gives a different stroke, each responding differently to pressure and speed. With practise, the range of lines that can be made with a single nib is enough to Read the full article…

Apex Legends Is a Leap Forward for Accessibility

From cognitive disabilities to physical ones, there are a lot of reasons someone could feel uncomfortable or be incapable of engaging in voice chat. Sometimes, this isn’t a huge deal, but in this era of team-focused multiplayer games, it’s getting harder and harder to effectively communicate with your teammates without directly speaking to them. Yet Apex Legends, the latest addition to an ever-expanding landscape of Battle Royale shooters, is changing that. Apex’s ping system allows for more universal types of communication. Through simple button inputs combined with thoughtful audio cues, it creates an environment where virtually all relevant in-game information can be relayed to your team without uttering a single word. The system lets you place various markers on the map and battlefield, such as enemy locations, where to loot, and the direction you want your team to go next. Once the marker has been placed, your character will verbally Read the full article…
