In this article, we will look into five optimization tricks that will make your app feel more responsive. 1. Dequeue Reusable Cell You’ve probably used tableView.dequeueReusableCell(withIdentifier:for:) inside tableView(_:cellForRowAt:) before. Ever wondered why you have to follow this awkward API, instead of just passing an array of cell in? Let’s go through the reasoning of this. Say you have a table view with a thousand rows. Without using reusable cells, we would have to create a new cell for each row, like this: func tableView(_ tableView: UITableView, cellForRowAt indexPath: IndexPath) -> UITableViewCell { // Create a new cell Read the full article…

Hatch, Rovio’s ‘Netflix for gaming’, picks up NTT Docomo as a strategic investor

Rovio’s efforts to diversify beyond its Angry Birds franchise is getting a little investment boost today. The company announced that Japan’s NTT Docomo is taking a stake in Hatch, a Rovio subsidiary that describes itself as the “Netflix of gaming”, providing subscribers with a rotating mix of freemium games from a mix of publishers, with the option of paying a single monthly fee for a wider mix. Docomo and Rovio are not discussing the size or value of the stake, but a spokesperson for Rovio told TechCrunch that prior to this deal, Hatch was 80 percent owned by Rovio and 20 percent by Hatch personnel. He didn’t specify who had sold shares to Docomo in this latest transaction. The deal will cover not just investment to expand the Hatch platform and number of games on offer — currently the selection numbers over 100 — but to bring Hatch specifically to Read the full article…

Two more bangers for the Switch’s NES selection: Kirby and Super Mario Bros 2

Nostalgia for the NES is high following the success of Nintendo’s classic mini consoles and the launch of its Switch Online service, which just got a couple more great additions to its selection of 8-bit games: Kirby’s Adventure and the immortally weird Super Mario Bros 2. Kirby had just made his debut on the Game Boy, but the NES follow-up really improved things. Better controls, better graphics, still hard as hell. Super Mario Bros 2 is remembered as a curiosity, but it deserves more than that. Sure, it’s just an asset swap for Doki Doki Panic, but that doesn’t matter. It’s a fantastic game and you should take this opportunity to play it all the way through. Review: The NES Classic Edition and all 30 games on it As long as you’re here, I feel I should also plug the games added a couple weeks back that probably didn’t get Read the full article…

EA says Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will come out this fall

Electronic Arts said today that its next Star Wars game, to be called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, will come out this fall. The company had previously set 2019 as the release window for the story-focused game, which is in development with EA-owned studio and Titanfall creator Respawn Entertainment. But we haven’t gotten anything more concrete until EA disclosed the fall deadline in its quarterly earnings announcement this afternoon. Given recent news that EA scrapped its narrative-focused Star Wars game under the EA Vancouver studio, it’s good news to hear that Fallen Order is on track for a release later this year, although there is still the remote possibility that EA will decide to push its release date into 2020. That said, with… Read the full article…

Xbox One gamepads are $20 off, and make for great Switch controllers, too

Microsoft’s Xbox One controllers are $37.17 at Walmart and Amazon. That’s more than $20 off their regular price, and just a few dollars shy of the lowest price we’ve ever seen. Better still, this discount is for the newer model that can also connect to non-Xbox devices via Bluetooth, and has a 3.5mm headphone jack for private listening. That’s a good deal if you’re in need of a new controller for your Xbox One, and it’s a smart investment if you game on other platforms, too. For instance, Epic recently added Xbox One controller support for Fortnite on Android phones and tablets. If your PC has Bluetooth, you can sync it up to game with this Xbox gamepad. And even if it lacks Bluetooth, we might recommend this cheap 8BitDo Bluetooth… Read the full article…

Switch games are finally getting proper voice chat thanks to Vivox

Nintendo has an infamously bad voice chat system for the Switch, requiring players for most games to use a separate smartphone app to actually talk to friends online, leading to terrible, hacked-together solutions like Hori’s headphone splitter just to work. But that’s changing today, thanks to Vivox, which is bringing its voice and text chat system to all Nintendo Switch developers with a new SDK. You may not have heard of Vivox directly, but you’ve probably used it before — it already powers the existing voice chat in Fortnite, which coincidentally is also one of the only games on the Switch that has normal voice chat. (You just plug in a pair of headphones with a microphone into the headphone jack on the Switch and you’re good to go,… Read the full article…
