Web Performance For Third Party Scripts: SmashingConf Videos

Web Performance For Third Party Scripts: SmashingConf Videos Web Performance For Third Party Scripts: SmashingConf Videos The Smashing Editorial 2018-08-08T13:30:35+02:002018-08-10T08:02:58+00:00 We are continuing our exploration of video from Smashing Conferences this year with two videos that explore the impact of third party scripts. These scripts can add functionality, and give us valuable information, but what do they cost? These two talks will help you to assess the third party scripts you might be considering adding to a site, and to be able to advise your clients or team members when the request comes in to add yet another script to a global include file! Name That Script! Recorded at the SmashingConf in San Francisco earlier this year, Trent Walton asks how can we objectively measure the value of third party scripts for advertising, A/B testing, or analytics? We need to consider their impact on web performance, user experience, as well Read the full article…

Red Dead Redemption 2 sees Rockstar raising the bar for realism in open-world games

Open worlds have been a staple of gaming for a long time, but recent titles like Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn have significantly pushed the boundaries of what players expect from their environments. Rockstar, of Grand Theft Auto fame, is looking to make them all look like toys with Red Dead Redemption 2 and its wild west frontier that looks to be not just huge, but refreshingly real. Rockstar is certainly best known for the immensely popular GTA series; but it’s arguable its most beloved game is actually 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, which, though a sequel, so spectacularly transplanted the run-and-gun outlaw freedom of GTA to the American West that gamers have been clamoring for a sequel for years. RDR2 was teased back in late 2016, but only recently have we seen hints of what it will actually look like. And today brings the first of a Read the full article…

Fortnite for Android launches as a Samsung Galaxy exclusive today

It’s true, Fortnite is coming to Android this summer. We’ve known that for sure since May. There is, however, one key caveat (aside from that whole no Google Play bit): The obscenely popular sandbox survival game will launch on Google’s mobile OS as a Samsung exclusive. The Epic title will be available for Galaxy users with an S7 or higher (Note 9,  S9, Note 8, S8, S7,S7 Edge). Those with a Galaxy Tab S4 and S3 will get a crack it it, as well).  That, naturally, includes the new Note 9, which the company is positioning as something of a mobile gaming powerhouse. The specs are certainly impressive, and the 6.4-inch screen should lend itself well to portable gaming. There’s also a new Water Carbon Cooling system on board, to help keep the handset from overheating from more resource-intensive tasks. The new tech improves the liquid cooling system the company has Read the full article…

Discord is launching a game store

Just a few weeks back, Valve moved into Discord’s turf a bit with a dramatic overhaul of Steam’s chat system. Today, Discord is returning the favor by playing with the idea of selling games through its namesake chat platform. The company says it’ll launch a beta of the game store later today, though it’ll initially be limited to a small slice of its user base (which now sits at 150 million users). More specifically, the beta will roll out to just 50,000 users from Canada at first. It’ll be dabbling in game sales on two fronts: they’ll directly sell some games, while other games will be added perks for its Discord Nitro subscription service. Whereas Valve has massively increased the number of games on Steam over the last few years by opening up to third parties through things like Steam Greenlight or (more recently) Steam Direct, Discord is pitching this Read the full article…

This custom Fallout computer case brings you a piece of the Wasteland

The Fallout franchise is making its next appearance outside of your gaming system — as artwork to decorate your computer case. Gaming hardware maker NZXT will be producing officially licensed Fallout-themed computer cases, starting with the H700 Nuka-Cola. NZXT only made 2,000 of these limited edition cases featuring the game’s most popular soft drink. Fallout developer Bethesda Softworks describes the case as “a piece of the Wasteland,” and from the rear, it clearly resembles a soft drink vending machine from one of the games. The steel chassis has a tempered glass side panel, a bar to keep your cables in place, and support for AIO coolers. There’s also water-cooling and a perforated metal mesh to keep the airflow going. The artwork… Read the full article…

Samsung’s Fortnite exclusive will expire before the Note 9 even launches

Fortnite is making its way to Android, but not until Samsung device owners get a stab at it first… for a measly couple of days. At the Samsung Unpacked event on Thursday, the Fortnite team announced that Samsung users will be on the receiving end of an unusually short exclusive, ending well before the Galaxy Note 9 is released near the end of the month. In the next few days, the game will be made available for all other supported Android devices, so Pixel users and others won’t have to wait too long to start building forts and cracking open pink llama piñatas. According to a spokesperson for Epic Games, the company has yet to disclose exactly when the Android beta will be fully released. At the event, it was announced that it would be… Read the full article…

Fortnite for Android is launching today exclusively on recent Samsung Galaxy devices

One of the worst-kept secrets in gaming has turned out to be true: the Android version of Fortnite will be available exclusively on Samsung devices at launch. But it’s not just the new Note 9 and Tab S4 getting Fortnite; owners of a range of recent Samsung devices — the S9 / S9 Plus, Note 8, Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Tab S3 — can all start playing the beta today. You’ll be able to install Fortnite from either Samsung’s Game Launcher app or Epic’s new installer, both available here. The official announcement from Samsung comes after a handful of reports pointed to the possibility, most recently following a leak of the game’s APK. The exclusivity period will last “for the next few days,” according to Samsung. That… Read the full article…
