Wix Code Review: Building Web Apps With Ease

One of the common problems most front-end web designers face is building the back-end of website projects. Usually, designers have to team up with web developers to work on projects such as web apps and eCommerce platforms. What if there was a way to easily design both the front-end and back-ends of websites such as checkout systems, membership databases, web apps, and more, in a user-friendly and approachable way? Well, that’s exactly what Wix Code does. Let’s take a closer look. What Is Wix Code? Wix Code is an IDE (integrated development environment) with a JavaScript backend built for web developers and web designers to let you “create without limits”. While the main Wix website builder focuses on offering the simplest website setup experience to beginners, Wix Code takes the website builder to the next level and allows designers to add and customize the design at a deeper level. Pluto VR wants to be the application we use to talk to other people who are also wearing a virtual or augmented reality headset. The four-year-old Seattle startup is developing something like Skype or Facebook Messenger — a communication app that can run on its own, or on top of other experiences — but for virtual reality. Nightfall in Bellevue: Destiny 2 update will bring scoring changes to popular online game

Bungie Image Bellevue, Wash.-based game developer Bungie has made a reputation for itself over the last couple of decades by, well, taking over the known universe once every couple of years. Its current bid for world domination is Destiny 2, the Activision-published massively-multiplayer-online first-person shooter, and it’s preparing for the imminent release of patch 1.1.3 on Feb. 27. In the regular This Week at Bungie blog, Bungie’s community manager “dmg04” disclosed the current development roadmap for Destiny 2 and discussed the biggest new feature coming in next Tuesday’s patch: Nightfall Challenge Cards, several changes to how players score points in Nightfall raids, and a series of tweaks to how the Emblem system works. Nightfall strikes are a weekly event that must be played solo or with a premade team, meant to be one of the most difficult challenges in Destiny 2. In patch 1.1.3, the scoring rules will change in a Read the full article…

These relaxing adventures are a peaceful getaway from the real world

When people talk about escapism in video games, they usually mean huge, sprawling worlds you can get lost in. There are vast fantasy realms like in The Witcher, a post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Fallout series. The kinds of games you can play for dozens or hundreds of hours, losing an entire evening while the real world around you slips away. But who has time for that? Lately I’ve found myself searching for a different kind of escapism. Smaller spaces that don’t offer an entire world to explore — instead, they’re a brief getaway to calm my nerves. Over the past week, two great examples of this have come out. One is the snowboarding adventure Alto’s Odyssey on the iPhone. An endless snowboarding game where the goal is ostensibly to rack… Read the full article…

Thomy insulin kit uses design to help kids with diabetes

Product design graduate Renata Souza has developed a child-friendly insulin kit for children with Type-1 diabetes. Showcased at Cape Town’s Design Indaba 2018, Thomy is a cheerful, portable kit for kids aged four and over.  Inside the kit is an insulin pen that’s been ergonomically designed for a child’s hand, and a set of playful, non-toxic temporary tattoos that help children remember where they’ve already injected insulin. According to statistics portal Statista, there were 596,000 children with diabetes worldwide in 2017, with 96,000 diagnosed that year. Thomy adds a bit of fun to the process of managing a difficult condition. The idea for Thomy came about when Souza’s six-year-old nephew Thomás was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes. “Living with this condition involves altering daily habits, like monitoring glucose levels, injecting insulin, and supervising diet and exercise,” explains Souza.  “After observing Thomás’ routine, I realised how tedious the process of injecting insulin Read the full article…

Metal Gear Survive Dev Appears to Call Out Konami in Hidden Message

A rogue developer (or developers) appears to have hidden a message in Metal Gear Survive, lambasting Survive’s director and producer while mourning Kojima Productions, the former developer of the series. Right after you’re prompted to enter your name at the beginning of Survive’s campaign, you’ll see it added to a clipboard among a group of other military code-names. Eagle eyed users on both Reddit and Twitter have noticed that if you take the first letter of each of the last names on that page, it spells out “KJP Forever”, which could be interpreted as “Kojima Productions Forever” (with a break between the P and the F for the player’s custom name). Why Max from Life is Strange Is the Most Relatable Video Game Character I’ve Ever Played

At the start of 2015 I was in the middle of my third university degree after dropping out of the previous two, had just come out of my most serious relationship to date and had moved into a share house to live independently for the first time. It was a period in my life in which I was going through significant change and learning; dealing with the slow and often confusing transition from childhood, school and lack of responsibility, to well, adulthood. At the same time, and on the other side of the planet, a relatively unknown French studio called Dontnod Entertainment was gearing up to release the first episode of its next big project, an episodic game that would be a beacon for their success and own growth as a studio. Just the right amount of creativity

Elephants flying and spiritual parrots talking is not something businesses or HR want to see on your portfolio. Bear with me, in this article I will be talking through a little unpopular perspective amongst designers. It is to restrict yourself while being creative. That’s right, I will be asking you to not do the one thing you have always been trained to do. I became a graphic designer because I was good at a design software people dreaded to use and they threw that job at me every time they needed something to look pretty. Most of us start in a similar way. However, UX designers turn themselves into a deeper battle of several disciplines combined: Information ArchitectureSound DesignUser PsychologyPhilosophyWeb Design And many more… Problem Solving Even if you are not a UX designer, I believe that every design role has a bigger purpose than visual design. It is to solve problems. For Read the full article…

Discord expands its verified servers program to include pro e-sports teams

Discord, a chat platform for gamers, has teamed up with a number of e-sports teams to expand its verified servers program. In other words, now users will be able to tell right away if they’re communicating with an official e-sports team: there will be a gray badge at the top left saying, “Verified.” Discord has verified 20 new servers from pro teams that compete in games like Dota, League of Legends, CS:GO, and Overwatch. Some of these teams include the Overwatch League teams, as well as prominent competitive gaming sides like Team Liquid, Cloud 9, Echo Fox, Team Envyus, and 100 Thieves. The verified servers program hasn’t expanded to individual players and their Discord servers, however, probably because Discord offers a Partners… Read the full article…

The Nintendo Switch has me playing games I’d otherwise ignore

A year ago, if you had told me I’d be spending my evenings playing Payday 2 on a tablet, I wouldn’t have believed you. Yet, here I am, plugging away at a heist game that came out five years ago. Such is the power of the Nintendo Switch. As I’ve written multiple times before, the Switch is a device that fits into my life more than any gaming system before it. It seamlessly shifts from being a home console to a portable device, essentially eliminating the distinction between the two. Super Mario Odyssey isn’t a game I can play either at home or on the go; it’s just a game, and I can play it however I want. This benefits a lot of different kinds of experiences, whether it’s a sprawling epic like Breath of the Wild or a competitive… Read the full article…
