UI Development — Roles and Responsibilities

A front-end designer (UI Developer) truly relies upon the advancements being utilized. In the event that it is a web application then yes, the front-end will be utilizing a blend of innovations, for example, HTML, CSS, jQuery, Javascript, and maybe Flash and even Silverlight. Web development permits web designers to test and troubleshoot their code. They are not the same as web designers and incorporated improvement conditions (IDEs) in that they don’t aid the immediate production of a site page, rather they are instruments utilized for testing the UI of a site or web application. The part of a User Interface (UI) designer is to give the UI answer for the end client, including the last look, feel and conduct of the interface in various settings. They part of a UI Developer is the transformational blend of the parts of both the Web Designer and the Web Developer. The assignment Read the full article…

A GraphQL Primer: The Evolution Of API Design (Part 2)

In Part 1 we looked at how APIs have evolved over the last few decades and how each one gave way to the next. We also talked about some of the particular drawbacks of using REST for mobile client development. In this article, I want to look at where mobile client API design appears to be headed — with a particular emphasis on GraphQL. There are, of course, lots of people, companies, and projects that have tried to address RESTs shortcomings over the years: HAL, Swagger/OpenAPI, OData JSON API and dozens of other smaller or internal projects have all sought to bring order to the spec-less world of REST. Respect Always Comes First

The past years have been remarkable for web technologies. Our code has become modular, clean and well-defined. Our tooling for build processes and audits and testing and maintenance has never been so powerful. Our design process is systematic and efficient. And after so many years, accessibility and performance have finally become established, well-recognized pillars of user experience. Read the full article…

Automated Browser Testing With The WebDriver API

Manually clicking through different browsers as they run your development code, either locally or remotely, is a quick way to validate that code. It allows you to visually inspect that things are as you intended them to be from a layout and functionality point of view. However, it’s not a solution for testing the full breadth of your site’s code base on the assortment of browsers and device types available to your customers. Read the full article…

#NotNolan: Why game creators are speaking out against the founder of Atari

The annual Game Developers Conference is one of the most prestigious events in gaming. Unlike expos like E3, where publishers arrive to make announcements and showcase their new products, GDC has a more educational aim, with panels from top developers teaching the finer points of their craft. GDC is also home to an awards show that honors the most esteemed, creative, and important games of the year, as well as the people behind them. Today, organizers announced that at the 18th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards, three men would be given the event’s top honors: Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismail will receive the Ambassador Award; Double Fine founder Tim Schafer gets the Lifetime Achievement Award; and Atari founder Nolan Bushnell will… Read the full article…

Respawn’s Star Wars Game Could Come by March 2020

Though EA hasn’t announced definitive plans for the future of its Star Wars games and their releases, the company’s executives offered some idea of when players might expect Respawn’s upcoming action game, as well as the next Star Wars Battlefront sequel. Speaking during today’s EA Q3 2018 earnings call, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson and CFO Blake Jorgensen discussed the future of the company’s Star Wars games. Specifically in regard to Respawn’s already announced Star Wars game, Jorgensen said, while EA has “not announced our products for fiscal yet,” Respawn’s title “most likely will drop in Fiscal 20 versus another Battlefront.” Fiscal years are offset from the calendar year. Fiscal Year 2020 would not kick in until April 1, 2019, with an end on March 31, 2020. That fiscal year would be the timeframe EA is projecting, though not necessarily defining as exactly when Respawn’s Star Wars title may be released. Read the full article…

EPISODE 17: SCALING SERVICE DESIGN: A CONFERENCE 2017 RECAP AND OUR REFLECTIONS

Listen to the episode on itunes We were happy to join the Global Service Design conference again this year. During the conference we talked to speakers, volunteers, organisers from all over the worldand many more. You can find a compilation of all these interviews and our own recap here. We had some time to think about and reflect on our learnings in our own work situation. We would like to give you a recap of the topics and discussions we found most relevant to the state of Service Design today. IS SERVICE DESIGN ABOUT DESIGNING A SERVICE OR IS IT ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SERVICE? A discussion arose over the fact that Service Design is still the ‘design’ and not the ‘implementation’ otherwise it would be called service implementation. We have to admit we were pretty upset with this one. We believe that design does not stand for phase were we come up Read the full article…

Enter The Dragon (Drop): Accessible List Reordering

Over the years of being a web developer with a focus on accessibility, I have mostly dealt with widely-adopted, standardized UI components, well supported by assistive technologies (AT). For these types of widgets, there are concise ARIA authoring practices as well as great tools like axe-core that can be used to test web components for accessibility issues. Creating less common widgets, especially those that have no widely-adopted conventions for user interaction can be very tricky. Read the full article…

Watch a team of blacksmiths make Shovel Knight’s iconic weapon

Man At Arms: Reforged is an engrossing video series that follows the blacksmiths at Baltimore Knife & Sword as they create real-world versions of fictional weapons and shields, such as Link’s Master Sword from Legend of Zelda to the Lich King’s Frostmourne from World of Warcraft to Wonder Woman’s iconic shield. In their latest video, they’ve created an unlikely weapon: the shovel from the retro side-scrolling game Shovel Knight. Swordsmith Kerry Stagmer notes at the top of the episode that he feels like users have been trolling them with suggestions that they make the shovel. But took them up on it, and they spend the entire episode overbuilding the weapon. They forge the blade, cutting edge, and socket, then later create the iconic… Read the full article…

Blizzard Details New Hearthstone Balance Changes

Blizzard has announced new balance changes coming to Hearthstone in the 10.2 update. In a blog post, Blizzard detailed a series of nerfs coming to several popular cards when the update hits next month. As expected, Corridor Creeper – a card that appears in a high percentage of the most powerful decks in the game – will be changed. It is now a 2/5 instead of a 5/5, meaning that even when its cost is reduced to zero, it’s not capable of the same kinds of huge tempo swings. No one saw this card coming before Kobolds & Catacombs was released. Read the full article…

Cryptocurrency Evolution In Video Games

Cryptocurrencies at their essence are just limited entries in a database that no one can change without fulfilling specific conditions. Besides this being the exact definition of what a regular currency is, cryptocurrencies are currencies on steroids and they are more popular now than ever. Despite the fact that Bitcoin fell in price by roughly 20% in a mere seven-day span, it hasn’t affected the interest from people to form part of the cryptocurrency world. Another shift is that eSports and virtual gaming have now been considered to go hand in hand with cryptocurrencies. That’s because they come from similar tech cultures and complement each other. The two worlds have a similar underlying psychology, to level up, users need to either generate more cryptocurrency or earn more virtual coins to unlock new worlds. Cryptocurrencies became prominent with the introduction of Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) in 2013, which is also known as Read the full article…

The sins of user research. Let’s talk about it in the open!

The real problem now is the quality (not the quantity) of user research. User research, design research, UX research, user-centred design (call it whatever you prefer) has taken off in the recent years. Some hard battles have been won to show the value of putting users first. Non-user researchers observe and conduct sessions more these days. That’s great because it helps teams to get to know their users instead of user researchers ‘advocating’ for users. I believe that the best user researchers become dispensable. They find ways to help teams access and understand their users and carry out proper user research without them. In practice, this is easier said than done. User researcher’s fallacy: “My job is to learn about users”. Truth: “My job is to help my team learn about users”. #ux ?—?@cjforms What makes user research bad? As an outsourced researcher, I get to work with teams that have comissioned external Read the full article…
