Epic says it ‘messed up’ and removes overpowered Infinity Blade from Fortnite

Epic announced this morning that its new and controversial Infinity Blade “mythic” item has been removed from Fortnite, following widespread criticism over the item’s overpowered nature and game-breaking position as a pinnacle, late-game weapon. The reversal, while not the first time Epic has changed course on an unpopular design decision rather quickly, is notable for the language the developer used to announce it, as well as how much Epic hyped up the item in marketing and promos for the recently released season 7. “We messed up and rolled out the Infinity Blade overpowered / without good counters, especially in the end game,” reads the company’s tweet publicizing the change. “The Infinity Blade has been Vaulted and we are… Read the full article…

Nintendo’s NES Classic and SNES Classic are going out of production

Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic consoles are going away after the holidays — probably for good this time. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé said that the mini-consoles will be going out of production, and once the holiday season stock sells out, they won’t be restocked. Nintendo isn’t new to supply issues. The NES Classic immediately sold out when it was first released in November 2016, with resellers charging hundreds of dollars for the popular product. Initially discontinued in April 2017, Nintendo rereleased the $60 NES Classic this past June, and it has been fairly easy to come by ever since. The company corrected its mistake with the SNES Classic, its second… Read the full article…

Discord’s game store tries to top Steam and Epic by offering developers more money

Discord is looking to make its fledgling game store the most developer-friendly option around. Today, the company announced that it will offer developers a 90 percent share of revenue when its PC game store opens up to all creators starting next year. The store first launched in October with a heavily curated selection of indie games, including Into the Breach and Dead Cells as well as a handful of timed exclusives. Currently, it operates under a fairly standard 70 / 30 revenue split. “Turns out, it does not cost 30 percent to distribute games in 2018,” Discord CEO Jason Citron explained in a blog post. “After doing some research, we discovered that we can build amazing developer tools, run them, and give developers the majority of the… Read the full article…

Live Face for iClone 7 review

Live Face is Reallusion’s latest markerless facial mocap solution for iClone 7. It’s an app specifically for the iPhone X that uses the phone’s depth sensor and tracking software to track the user’s face and stream the data into iClone through Reallusion’s Motion LIVE plugin to create realistically animated 3D art.  Facial animation can be previewed and recorded in real time on single or multiple characters. It can also be performed whilst capturing animation (for the body and hands as well as the face) from other mocap systems.  I’ve used many different facial mocap systems over the years, marker based and markerless, and while none are perfect, the iPhone X/Live Face approach is remarkably stable and easy to use straight away. The depth sensor approach means it’s tolerant of uneven and low lighting conditions, and the fact that the capture itself is performed on the phone rather than the PC Read the full article…
